The Weyburn Review and Weyburn This Week earned a number of awards in the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association’s annual Better Newspapers competition, with premier and general excellence awards.
Under the general excellence category, where entire issues of the paper were judged, the Weyburn Review won first place for Best Editorial Page in the Class C category, and second place for Best Front Page.
Weyburn This Week earned a third place finish for Best Editorial Page in the Class D category.
Under the premier awards, with awards given in specific categories, the Review’s Sabrina Kraft and Greg Nikkel earned a third place award for Best Educational Coverage for K-12 series of stories.
Nikkel won second for Best Photo Essay of the Year, for an essay on the Esso Cup championship hosted in Weyburn last year, and second for Best Sports Photo of a cowboy wrestling a steer at the high school rodeo last year.
The winners of the 2017 Better Newspapers Competition were announced at the SWNA Annual General Meeting on April 1.
