St. Michael School officially opened their new chapel on January 8. The chapel will serve as the heart of the catholic school and a formal connection to the St. Vincent de Paul parish.
When St. Michael and St. Dominic Savio Schools combined into one building, including a chapel was an immediate thought, said Bruno Tuchscherer, member of the Holy Family Catholic School Division board.
"It's not meant to be a regular classroom, but a formal connection to the church. It's a great thing to see," he said.
The room is large enough to accommodate two classroom groups in pew-style seating. The chapel was a part of the planning and developing of Phase II of construction.
The board of education, St. Michael School SCC, school administration and the Holy Family central office staff all contributed to the final development of the chapel.
The school plans on utilizing the chapel as a gathering place for prayer, religious instruction, for sharing song or special presentations to help develop the faith understanding of the St. Michael School students.
"It is anticipated that the chapel will be used by teachers and visitors," said Fingler.
It's not often that an elementary school is able to have a special place dedicated to demonstrating faith and community, and St. Michael School has one at its heart, where worship and celebration are the main focus.
The chapel is only large enough to hold a classroom, so the altar is built on wheels so it can be easily moved to the gym.
"This is a beautiful centerpiece and we're lucky to have this," said Fingler.
