Many local youth will spend their summer enjoying crafts, reading and other activities through the TD Summer Reading Program at the Estevan Public Library.
This year’s program opened July 5. There will be five sessions each week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. Young people can attend one session a week.
Morgan Jones, who is the co-ordinator of this year’s program, said they had nearly 70 youths registered as of July 5, and they are continuing to accept young people, except for the Tuesday morning session, which is at capacity with 20 kids.
Each session will feature a craft, a story, games and snacks.
There will be a different theme every week, and each one will be connected in some way to this summer’s theme of the wild.
“There’s one with oceans, one has to do with animals, and one has to do with haikus and poems,” said Jones.
And lots of unique crafts are planned, such as wildlife masks and boat building. In one of the crafts, young people will draw Bigfoot while blindfolded.
Jones is a big supporter of the Summer Reading Program. She attended it each year with her brother, until they were too old to attend. It was a lot of fun, and now she is having fun planning the activities.
“It’s interesting to be on the other side of things, to see how much work you have to put into it, and to see if the kids enjoy it,” said Jones.
