Two young people from Estevan were recognized at the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association/SaskPower Junior Citizen of the Year Award ceremony.
Rebecca Duncan and Jordan Howie were presented with the awards during a ceremony at Government House in Regina on June 27. Only four Junior Citizen Awards are handed out each year, so it’s rare for one community to have two recipients.
They found out in mid-May that they would be receiving the award.
Howie, an 18-year-old who is entering his second year of business studies at the University of Regina, has demonstrated an outstanding work ethic, holding down multiple jobs since he was 12 years old.
He is also a humanitarian, as he recently returned from a trip to Peru, where he helped build a dining hall for a community in the Andes Mountains.
Duncan, 11, was the youngest of the four award recipients this year. She was saluted for her academic accomplishments, her athletic ability, her artistic ability and her musical acumen. She has already been recognized locally, provincially and nationally for her artwork and her musical abilities.
She has performed at the United Way Estevan’s telethon and at Telemiracle.
The other recipients this year were Gillesa Bolton of Macklin and Kalicia Chorney of Nipawin.
