The Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins recently landed back in the win column by defeating the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers on the road, and also earned a home win over the Lumsden/Bethune Lions.

Estevan overcame Yorkton 4-3 on Feb.14 and on the following day beat Melville 5-2. The Bruins’ 10-2 home win over the Lions on Feb. 12 started the three game win streak.

In the game against Melville, Estevan never trailed. Kolton Ganson opened the scoring on a short-handed goal as the Bruins led 1-0 after 20 minutes.

During the second period, Estevan continued to light up the lamp as Marc Shaw scored on a power play, and Josh Giblett scored midway through the period. Giblett and Cole Skjonsby earned assists on the power play goal, and Preston Brodziak and Colton Winton had the helpers on the other.

Melville ruined the Estevan shutout just over two minutes into the third, but the Bruins responded with a goal by Brodziak as the deficit was too much for the Mils to overcome.

In Saturday’s win against the Terriers, Yorkton jumped out to an early lead but the Bruins tied the game 17 seconds later when Colton Gingras scored. Cole Piche earned the assist.

In the second period, Yorkton took the lead, but Estevan again came right back when Ganson tied the game. He was assisted by Brady Long.

Winton put the Bruins in the lead, scoring a goal toward the end of the period. Matt Bill and Brodziak each had a helper on that play.

Estevan added to their lead three minutes into the third when Brodziak netted one for the visitors. He was assisted by Skjonsby.

Coach Blake Jamieson was impressed by the physical game that his team played as they were able to hold on to the lead in the third period. The coach said he was proud with the way his team played throughout the weekend.

“It was a pretty good overall effort by our guys over the whole weekend,” he said. “We just need to continue to play like we did on the weekend.”

On Feb. 12 the Bruins started their winning ways with a blowout home victory over the Lions.

Lumsden/Bethune got on the scoreboard first, but Estevan responded with three consecutive goals in the period. Peyton Stevenson, Bill, and Winton, were the goal scorers.

During the first period the Bruins got into some penalty trouble, committing four.

“There were some questionable penalty calls I thought, but we were able to kill them off and score on our opportunities,” Jamieson said.

The Bruins didn’t slow down in the second period as Piche, Brodziak, Winton, and Mitchell Morrison scored a goal each to make it 7-1 after two periods.

Winton, Brodziak and Ganson finished the lopsided win with three goals in the third before the Lions score their second of the game in the dying seconds.

Estevan hosted the Notre Dame Hounds on Feb. 17. Results were unavailable as of press time.

The Bruins start a three game road trip in Weyburn against the Lightstream Wings on Feb. 19. They play the Swift Current K-Motel Hurricanes on Feb. 21 and then visit the Moose Jaw Warriors the following day.

Estevan is back home on Feb. 24 when they take on the Yorkton Terriers at Affinity Place. The game starts at 8 p.m.
