Assistant coach hired for Red Wings

Brock Appleyard, an alumni from the Weyburn Red Wings, will be joining the coaching staff this fall. The Weyburn Red Wings announced Appleyard as their new assistant coach for the upcoming 2016-17 season on Tuesday morning.

The Weyburn Red Wings announced Appleyard as their new assistant coach for the upcoming 2016-17 season on Tuesday morning.
“He recently completed his five seasons of CIS hockey with the University of Regina Cougars, and comes to the team with fresh ideas, a high hockey IQ, and a some very good connections,” stated Wes Rudy, head coach on the decision. “He’s young, energetic, and showed great leadership as captain when he played with the Red Wings, which he will bring into his new role.”
Appleyard was a player with the Weyburn Red Wings from 2008-2011.
When asked about the new role, Brock said, “I’m excited to be back in Weyburn and looking forward to this opportunity.”
“We are thrilled to add Brock to our program here in Weyburn,” said Tanner McCall, general manager for the Red Wings.
“Not only was Brock a good player but he was a well-respected teammate and member of the community while he was here playing for the Red Wings. Brock will do a great job with our organization, and should be a valuable tool in preparing our boys to play at the highest level possible,” said McCall.
Appleyard originates from Lundar, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Regina Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies in 2016.
During his three seasons with the Weyburn Red Wings, Appleyard was assistant captain in the 2009-10 season, and co-captain in the 2010-11 season. He scored 49 goals and 69 assists during his 153-game career.
During his five seasons with the Cougars, he was assistant captain for the 2014-15 season, and was named as Academic All-Canadian during the same season.
The Weyburn Red Wings’ new staff are looking ahead to the upcoming season, with the strong list of new prospects and returning players.
