The Weyburn Beavers hammered out 20 hits to win game one of the eastern division final over the Swift Current 57s on Monday night. The Beavers advanced to the eastern division final after winning three out of four games played against the Regina Red Sox during the semi final series.
Swift Current is making a back-to-back appearance in the eastern division final, while Weyburn’s last appearance in the eastern division final was 2015. During their regular season series, Weyburn won six out of eight games over Swift Current.
During the eastern division final on Monday night, Zach Mathis and Anthony Wiggins each had four hits to power the Weyburn offence. Zach Frazier chipped in with a grand slam shot in the fifth inning. Both teams had three home runs.
The Beavers got a complete game from starter Garrett Waters. The senior from the University of Mobile, who has now won both of his playoff starts, threw 111 pitches, 77 for strikes. Waters allowed four runs on 10 hits and fanned seven Swift Current hitters in his winning performance.
The series against Regina started on August 1, when the Beavers started off with a 6-2 victory at Tom Laing Park. Then on August 2, Regina tied up the series by winning 6-2 against the Beavers. Games three and four were both held in Regina. The Beavers won 6-4 over the Red Sox on August 3, and then finished off the series with a 11-5 victory on August 4.
Game two of the eastern division final was held Tuesday night. Game three will be held in Weyburn tonight, August 9 at Tom Laing Park. Game four, if needed, will also be hosted at Tom Laing Park on Thursday, August 10. Both games have a 7 p.m. start time.
