The Weyburn Senior Beavers have improved their record since coming back from a tough six-game road trip to Alberta, and after back-to-back wins over the Regina Red Sox, were just two games back of first place in the Eastern Division of the WMBL.
On Tuesday evening, the Beavers travelled to Currie Field in Regina for the second night in a row, and came away with a 4-1 win, with Regina and Swift Current tied for first place in the division. The win was the Beavers’ fourth in a row, and in their last 10 games they have a 7-3 record.
The winning pitcher was Austin Gurr, who was on the mound for seven innings, and kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard other than a single run in the third inning.
Weyburn’s runs came in the sixth inning, when they took a 2-1 lead, and they added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to clinch the victory.
The Beavers four runs were split between Luis Jimenez and Brett Young, with Jimenez having the hottest bat on the Weyburn squad with a batting average of .384 as of Wednesday.
The Beavers were in Regina on Monday evening as well, and came away with a close 10-9 victory.
Garrett Waters was the winning pitcher, throwing for seven innings on the mound, and the save was credited to Cody Pamperin.
The Beavers started with a three-run deficit after the first inning, and got two runs back in the second inning, tying the game in the third.
The teams each got a run in the fourth. The Red Sox added a run in the fifth and sixth, and the Beavers brought in two runs in the sixth, with two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. The Red Sox tried coming back in the ninth with three runs, but Weyburn held on for the win.
Hosting the Swift Current 57s on Sunday evening at Tom Laing Park, the Beavers doubled the visitors 6-3, with pitcher Landon Mostellar credited with the win, going for six innings.
Weyburn had single runs in the first and second innings, including a home run single in the first by Luis Jimenez, while the 57s had single runs in the second and third innings, with the Beavers scoring three in the fourth inning, and adding one more in the sixth. The 57s didn’t record another run until the top of the ninth.
The previous night, Weyburn defeated the 57s by the identical score of 6-3 in Swift Current, starting the game with three runs in the first inning, adding a single in the fourth and two more to secure the win in the eighth.
Swift Current couldn’t get on the board until the sixth inning with a single run, and added two more in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to pull out a win.
Conner DiNaro was the winning pitcher, going seven innings.
The lone loss came on Friday evening in Melville, when the Millionaires defeated the Beavers 5-1. Ryan Johnson was the losing pitcher, with Weyburn getting their lone run in the first inning.
On Thursday evening, their first home game after the Alberta road trip, the Beavers hosted the Yorkton Cardinals and trounced them 8-2. The winning pitcher was Cody Pamperin, who threw for six innings. The Beavers were first on the board with three runs in the first inning, with Yorkton scoring two in the top of the third to make it 3-2 before Weyburn added two runs, and never looked back, adding one more in the seventh, and two more in the eighth for the victory.
The Beavers hosted the Red Sox at Tom Laing Park on Thursday evening, and this weekend they will be at home to Melville on Saturday, July 15.
Going into a new week, the weekend will be followed by visitors from Alberta, with a pair of home games at Tom Laing Park on Monday evening, July 17, and Tuesday, July 18, both versus Lethbridge, followed by two back-to-back games against Medicine Hat on Wednesday and Thursday, July 19 and 20, before the Beavers have another road game.
