The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins became the first team to knock off the Melfort Mustangs this season, beating the Mustangs 3-2 at Affinity Place on Friday night.
Matthew Chekay set the tone early in the game by scoring 98 seconds into the first period and giving the Black and Gold a 1-0 lead. Hayden Guilderson doubled the lead with 3:03 to play in the first period.
A goal by Loch Morrison with 48 seconds left in the first period pulled the Mustangs to within a goal.
Captain Jake Fletcher scored with eight minutes to play in the second to restore the Bruins two-goal advantage, but Jake Misskey's goal with just over four minutes to play in the second pulled the Mustangs to within a goal again.
The Bruins then held the Mustangs at bay in the third period by surrendering only five shots on goal, and preventing Melfort from scoring the tying goal.
Matt Lukacs stopped 16 of 18 shots he faced to get the win. Evan Plotnik made 30 saves for Melfort.
The Bruins improved their record to 7-2-1. Melfort is now 8-1.
Estevan's next game is Tuesday night in Yorkton.
