Carnduff still leads Big Six by several points

Perhaps with still a bit of turkey leftovers on the brain, the Carnduff Red Devils lost only their second game of the year on their second game after Christmas in Big Six Hockey League action last weekend.

Perhaps with still a bit of turkey leftovers on the brain, the Carnduff Red Devils lost only their second game of the year on their second game after Christmas in Big Six Hockey League action last weekend.

The Bienfait Coalers (8-5-0) knocked off league leading Red Devils (13-2-0) 6-3 Saturday night at Bienfait, adding some intrigue for the league’s second half of the season. The Coalers opened the scoring 36 seconds into the game with a goal from Wyatt Garagan assisted by Dylan Herzberg. But their three-goal second period is what helped them the most, getting another goal from Garagan and the first of two from Dustin Stepp. Other Coalers goals in the game were scored by Kyle Garagan and Preston Erickson.

Matt Audette scored two for the Red Devils in the game, adding an assist, and Matt Pews scored the other goal for Carnduff.

Carnduff had beaten the Oxbow Huskies (6-10-0) the night before in Oxbow.  Audette had a goal and an assist in the game, as did Brandon Trask. Michael Hengen scored a goal and an assist for Oxbow in the loss.

Redvers kicked off the post-Christmas part of their schedule with a 6-2 win in Wawota over the Flyers. Three second-period goals led the Rockets (10-5-0) to the win. Brent Wilson had five assists in the game for Redvers. Colton MacPherson had a goal and an assist for Wawota (9-2-3).

The Midale Mustangs (9-5-0) took the Arcola/Kisbey Combines (1-13-0) to school on Friday night, beating them 10-2 in Midale. The eruption of seven goals in the first two periods meant the game was out of hand before the Combines hit the scoresheet. Connor Burk had three goals and three assists for the Mustangs, and Adam Ziegler added a pair of goals and an assist. Duane Hislop had a goal and an assist for Arcola/Kisbey.

Despite a late comeback attempt, the Carlyle PureChem Cougars (1-14-1) were edged in their last game 5-4 by Oxbow. Three goals by captain Ben Johnstone, including one with 2:29 left in the third, weren’t enough to get by the Huskies. Bryden Odgers’ goal for Oxbow with 5:29 left was too much for the Cougars to come back from.

This weekend’s action will see Redvers go to Midale, Yellow Grass travel to Bienfait and Carnduff at Oxbow Friday. On Saturday, Wawota plays at Carnduff, Arcola/Kisbey will go to Oxbow and Carlyle is at Yellow Grass. Sunday’s lone game has Wawota at Midale.
