Cobra wrestlers compete at nationals

Seven members of the Weyburn Cobra Wrestling team traveled to Windsor, Ont. to compete in the cadet and juvenile National Wrestling Championships from April 7 to 9. During day one of the competition, the boys took to the mats.

Seven members of the Weyburn Cobra Wrestling team traveled to Windsor, Ont. to compete in the cadet and juvenile National Wrestling Championships from April 7 to 9.
During day one of the competition, the boys took to the mats. Tyler Fleming wrestled hard in juvenile boys 69 kilogram category and was eliminated after two matches. Ryan Verbeem was eliminated in juvenile boys 76 kg category after two matches.
Dawson Runge wrestled in the 46 kg male cadet boys category. He won three and lost two matches in the meet and was two matches short of the bronze medal match. Eric Socaliuc wrestled in the 54 kg cadet male category and lost in the bronze medal match to finish fourth in Canada.
During day two of the national competition, the girl athletes competed in their categories. Frankie Gawryluik competed in the cadet female 60 kg. She won all four of her matches to win gold and was crowned a national champion. All four of Gawryluik’s matches went the distance, going four minutes each. With her finish she also earned a spot to compete in the Cadet FILA trials.
Katelyn Franklin competed in the 65 kg female juvenile category and wrestled hard. She lost her first and then battled back to win three straight matches before losing out in her fifth match. Katelyn did qualify for the Cadet FILA trials, but an elbow injury kept her from competing.
During the third and final day of the competition, Verbeem competed in the 76 kg cadet Greco-Roman category and Fleming competed in the 69 juvenile Greco-Roman category. Both competing for the first time in the event had strong matches, but were both eliminated from the competition after two matches.
Frankie Gawryluik competed in the 60 kg Cadet FILA trials which were held on April 9, and placed fifth in her category. She won one and lost two in the trials.
