The Weyburn Comp Eagles senior girls basketball team had a strong showing at their home tournament to start the new year, and fell just short of winning the tournament championship in the final game versus Notre Dame on Saturday evening.
The girls opened the tournament defeating the Vanier Spirits by a score of 78-26 on Friday evening, and then on Saturday morning won their game over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones by a score of 68-38.
This advanced them to the championship final on Saturday evening against Notre Dame, where they were edged out 58-49.
“The girls had a great game against Notre Dame. Although we were mismatched in size, the Eagles played bigger than they were,” said the Eagles coach Karly Johnson.
“The lead went back and forth all game, with both teams going through periods of time where they couldn’t score. The girls played fantastic defense for four quarters, holding the Notre Dame Hounds to a 58-49 win.”
The last two tournaments for the senior boys basketball team have seen a mix of wins and losses, for an overall record of 13 wins and three losses. On Dec. 15 at the North Battleford Tournament, the Eagles won against Warman 76-74 and then beat John Paul II by a score of 67-62. In the final, the Comp boys defeated Meadow Lake 64-58 for the gold medal.
This past weekend at a tournament in Moose Jaw, the Eagles boys lost to Yorkton 87-80, and then lost in overtime to Marian 95-93. In their final game, they beat John Paul II by a score of 83-77.
The Comp junior boys, from Grades 9/10, travelled to Swift Current on the weekend. They beat Moose Jaw Central, Prince Albert St. Mary’s, and defeated Vanier in the final to bring home the gold medal.
This weekend, the senior girls will travel to a tournament in Prince Albert, while the senior boys will play in a tourney in Estevan. The junior boys will play in Regina, the freshman girls are in Moose Jaw, and the junior girls basketball team will host their home tournament on Friday and Saturday.
