The Carlyle Cougars battled back from a three-goal deficit to beat the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings 5-4 in overtime at the Carlyle Sports Arena on Friday.

The Carlyle Cougars battled back from a three-goal deficit to beat the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings 5-4 in overtime at the Carlyle Sports Arena on Friday.

Down 3-0 with 20 minutes left to play, the Cougars (1-3) burst out of the gates in the third period with Joel Mack, Billy Greenwood and Brett Turgeon finding the back of Wheat Kings goalie Tanner Erickson's net in the first nine minutes of the frame. Turgeon added the go-ahead marker about five minutes later only to have Yellow Grass (2-1-1) come back with Brock Appleyard tying the game 4-4 with 1:25 remaining. Cougars captain Ben Johnstone got the game winner 1:48 into the extra frame.

A third period comeback fell short for the Oxbow Huskies (2-3) in their 2-1 loss to the Midale Mustangs (2-4) at Oxbow Arena on Friday. Down 2-0 on second and third period goals by Mustangs forward Colton MacLean, the Huskies made a late push to tie the game with Derek Cooney bringing the team to within one with just over two minutes remaining, but that was all they could get past Mustangs goalie Derek Tendler.

The third Big Six Hockey League match on Friday night featured another comeback attempt with the Wawota Flyers (1-3) almost erasing a 5-1 deficit in the third period against the Redvers Rockets (3-2) at the Redvers Rec Centre. The Flyers' Justin Lamontagne, Andrew Sillers and Drake Bodie all lit the lamp in the final 20 minutes, but the team ran out of time before potting the equalizer.

The same formula provided similar results for the Flyers at the Carnduff Fast Trucking Centennial Arena on Saturday. After spotting the Red Devils a 5-2 lead after two periods, the Flyers battled back to make the score 5-4 before Matthew Audette brought the lead back up to two goals halfway through the stanza. The Flyers' Dylan Lamontagne made the deficit 6-5 with 2:12 left to play to finish off the scoring.

The Red Devils (3-0-1) earned the weekend sweep the next day beating the Rockets 5-3 at the Redvers Rec Centre. Audette picked up a goal and an assist against Redvers and Kody Martin added two helpers to pace the Flyers, while Jarvis Ducharme potted two goals for the Rockets.

The Rockets travel to Carnduff to meet the Red Devils again on Saturday and the Bienfait Coalers (4-0) head on the road to do battle with the Carlyle Cougars on Friday in the only two games of a light Big Six Hockey League schedule this weekend.
