Minor football playoffs continues for the Crescent Point Energy peewee Eagles and the Young Fellow bantam Falcons during the weekend.

The CP Energy Eagles lost a heartbreaker 18-12 semi final game against the Moose Jaw Lions on Friday; while the YF Falcons advance to the bantam city championships after defeating the Swift Current Steelers 51-0 on Saturday.

Chris Michel, head coach of the peewee Eagles, knew that their game against the Lions would be a tight one, since they were both evenly-matched teams. “It was quite an emotional game for our team.”

The score was 0-0 after half time, and then Moose Jaw took a 12-6 lead late in the game. The Eagles tied the game, with 30 seconds left on the clock, but were unable to score the conversion, coming up one yard short.

Then when Moose Jaw reclaimed the ball, they fumbled it and Keith Allan from the Eagles caught it to give Weyburn one more chance at scoring during regulation play.

The Eagles threw a passing play, and they carried it down the field, with their player tackled with just three yards away from the end zone. Then in the overtime action, the Lions scored a touchdown to advance to the peewee city championships.

“The game was very competitive, and there was a lot of drama. It was heart-breaking for our players to lose, there were 38 sets of eyes with tears in the locker room,” said Michel.

“But the coaches were proud of the team, since they left it all on the field and gave us 110 per cent, it was a good way to end the season,” added Michel.

As for the YF Falcons, they will face up against the Moose Jaw Raiders on Saturday, Nov. 1 for the bantam city championships. The Falcons met up against the Raiders twice during the regular season, splitting their action with the team.

The Falcons and the Raiders both ended up with the same amount of wins and losses, at the end of the regular season. When comparing their two games, the Falcons had more overall points, which gave them the top position in the bantam league.

The city championship will be a hard-fought match between both teams, as they will both want the championship title.

This is the first year that the Crescent Point Energy peewee Eagles and the Young Fellow bantam Falcons had both competed in the Moose Jaw minor football league.
