The Estevan Golden Eels swim team kicked off the season this past weekend by capturing a treasure of bronze, silver and gold at meets in Swift Current and Gravelbourg.
Thirty-four members of the Eels travelled to Swift Current’s Fairview Pool on Saturday to show off the advances they’ve made in the water since the team began training two months ago. The club won their first high point team award of the season at the meet earning 395 points.
One day later, 34 Eels swimmers competed in a Gravelbourg meet. The squad again won the top overall team points award at this contest by scoring 445 points.
Swim meets function differently during the regular season than they do during provincial competitions as each swimmer accumulates points throughout the meet for each race that they compete in. The top six swimmers of each race at a meet then earns a point ranking and ribbon for their placing with the top-three high point swimmers in each age division earning a gold, silver or bronze medal for their accomplishments.
Medal winners at the Swift Current meet were: Jordyn Tarnes, gold for ages 7-8 girls; Blake Andrist, gold for ages 7-8 boys; Emily Tarnes, gold for ages 9-10 girls; Kaitlyn Waldegger, bronze for ages 9-10 girls; Tristan Threinen, gold for ages 9-10 boys; Ethan Elliott, silver for ages 9-10 boys; Carson Wheeler, bronze for ages 11-12 boys; Hannah Mantei, gold for ages 13-14 girls; Taeghan Hack, silver for ages 13-14 girls; Josh Wilson, silver for ages 13-14 boys; and Cassidy Reich, bronze for ages 18-and-over girls.
