The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs junior boys’ golf team is the 2015 Southeast District champions and team member Jace Carlisle has claimed the individual title.
The Elecs won the championship Sept. 25 at the Carlyle Golf Club, when two members of the four-person Grade 9 team scored one-two in the rankings. Carlisle took home the individual championship with a score of 39 on the nine-hole course, while teammate Jean Luc Dupuis tied Estevan’s Westview School’s Jayden Dudas for second spot with a score of 40.
ECS Elecs golfer Mason Strutt shot 47 on the day and fourth team member Morgan Wanner hit a 62. Elecs’ head coach Wes Kreklewich said the great showing by all five kids shows the future of Elecs’ golf is bright.
“The boys that we have right now in Grade 9 and Grade 10 and coming up is fantastic,” said Kreklewich.
On the senior side, Grade 12 athlete Erik McKersie finished second at districts held at Golf Kenosee on Sept. 15. He shot an 83 over 18 holes on the day.
Kreklewich said the Elecs’ golfing season runs from April till the end of September. He said they have school tournaments in May and June before the kids compete in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit tour over the summer before the kids come back to tournament play for the Elecs in September.
“We’re proud of them obviously at districts,” he said. “They competed well. I watched Jace on the first hole and he narrowly missed a hole-in-one by a couple feet. He almost drove the next par four, chipped on tight and could have went birdie birdie for his first two holes. We have so many fantastic golfers in this community.”
