The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior boys basketball team was the class of a tournament in Brandon, Man., on the weekend.

The Elecs went a perfect 5-0 to win the tournament. In the final, they won 73-68 over Dauphin, in a game that the Elecs trailed by 10 points with four minutes to play.

Estevan’s other scores in the tournament were 85-69 over Winnipeg’s Calvin Christian School, 85-65 over Brandon’s Neelin High School and 98-64 over Northland West of Winnipeg in the round-robin, and 64-58 over Brandon’s Crocus Plains in the semifinal in a game that the Elecs trailed by 10 at one point.

Clark Cabiluna was named the tournament MVP, while Reilly McGeough and Kyler Dutka were voted tournament all-stars.

Coach Trevor Dutka was impressed with how the team played defensively and how they executed their two offensive schemes.

“It’s just like anything else. Now the boys are starting to buy into the offensive schemes, and they see it working in game situations. They’re running our plays, and they’re working for them, and they’re really excited. You can tell they’re so excited about the season now,” said Dutka.

The tournament had some very good competition, even though some of the scores were lopsided.

“The scores look a little bit bad, but at the end of every game, every team is pressing and taking chances and stuff like that.”

A 10-point game can become a 20-point game in a hurry, he said.
