The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs have won the first two games of the annual four-game McLeod Series showdown with the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles.

The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs have won the first two games of the annual four-game McLeod Series showdown with the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles.

The Elecs senior boys' basketball team defeated Weyburn 76-66, while the senior girls' Elecs team beat Weyburn 70-52 before a large crowd at the ECS gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Both victories required a second half comeback for the Elecs. The senior boys trailed Weyburn 15-14 after the first quarter, and 32-31 at half-time. But Estevan outscored Weyburn 27-17 in the third quarter to take a 58-49 lead and outscored Weyburn by one in the fourth quarter.

The senior girls' Elecs trailed Weyburn 15-6 after the first quarter, but took over as the game progressed. They closed the gap to 30-26 at half-time, and outscored Weyburn 23-12 in the third quarter and 21-10 in the final stanza.

The third and fourth games in the McLeod Series will be played on Feb. 10 in Weyburn. If Estevan wins one of two games, they will win the series for the second straight year.

For Weyburn to win the series, they would need to win both games with a combined margin of victory of at least 29 points.

This week's edition of Lifestyles will have photos from tonight's games, and next week's edition of the Mercury will have more coverage of the games.
