The ECS Elecs senior girls basketball lost two over the weekend during regional tournament play.

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) senior girls Elecs basketball team dropped both of their games during the regional tournament in Regina on March 20 and 21.

The Elecs were matched up against Winston Knoll for the Hoopla qualifier and lost 86-63 on March 20.

Estevan was trailing 58-30 after two quarters, and going into the second half of the game, coach Jessie Smoliak said the game plan was to shorten the gap in the score by shooting three pointers. By doing that they outscored Winston Knoll 31-28, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Tess Lindquist had 24 points in the game to lead the scoring for Estevan and Kristen Skjonsby contributed with 15 points.

Smoliak said that Winston Knoll was a very good team; they kept moving the ball around and they had one of the top guards in Saskatchewan playing on their team.

In their second game, Estevan  fell 58-56 to the Regina LeBoldus. Kristen Skjonsby was the lead scorer for Estevan, with 20 points.

With the two losses, the Elecs unfortunately didn’t advance to Hoopla.

One of the highlights of the weekend was after their final game, they met up with Payton Sernick, who they raised $2,500 for during the Shoot for a cure campaign.

They gave her a signed pink ball along with the money as Payton and her family attended the last game of the season for the Elecs.

“It was a very emotional day, not only with helping Payton beat cancer, but it was our last game with the Grade 12s,” Smoliak said.
