The Estevan Blue Rock junior midget Bruins swept Weyburn in their three-game league championship final on March 28.
Estevan defeated Weyburn 7-3 on the road, to become champions.
In the opening period, the Bruins were first on the score board. Preston Brodziak had the goal and Hunter Piche earned the assist.
Weyburn then scored three unanswered goals in the period. Estevan pulled within one with two seconds remaining in the period, when Brodziak notched his second goal of the game and again was assisted by Piche.
Coach Sabe Holzer said that defensive breakdowns from his team are what lead to Weyburn’s three goals.
Weyburn had a 3-2 lead after the first frame, but Estevan regained momentum from late in the first to score six unanswered goals in the final two periods.
The Bruins tied the game in the second, after Preston Audet, from Brodziak and Piche, netted one.
Wyatt Haux regained the lead for the Bruins when he beat the Weyburn goaltender. Zach Holzer had the assist.
Estevan had a 4-3 lead after two periods.
In the final period, Estevan continued to score by recording three goals. Audet scored his second of the game, to give his team a two-goal lead. Brodziak earned is third goal of the game. Piche contributed with the assist.
In the final two minutes, Audet scored his second goal of the game to give the Bruins a 7-3 win.
Holzer was proud with the Bruins’ ability to not allow a brief momentum shift discourage them and to find a way to fight back.
“We did not panic at any given point and just … chipped away at it (and) regained the lead,” he said.
The Bruins finished first overall in the league and Holzer said that by winning the championship, it solidified their position as top team all season.
