The Estevan Extreme 15-and-under volleyball club is the 2016 provincial champion.
The Extreme defeated the Martensville Outerlimits Thunder 25-19, 25-14 at Warman’s Legends Centre on May 1 in the gold medal game of the Conexus Provincial Volleyball Championships to capture the 15U Division 2 title. The club went undefeated in the three-day championship tournament going 3-0 in round-robin play before beating the Meadow Lake volleyball club in the crossover game and the Kerrobert West Central Smash in the first round of the tier 1 playoffs.
“In the semifinal we played a Moose Jaw 15U team,” said Extreme coach Trent Walter. “That was our toughest match of the tournament. We hadn’t lost any (sets) to that point. We won our first game against Moose Jaw 15U, ended up losing our second game, then in the third game we were down 13-9 and the game goes to 15, so the pressure was on. The girls really settled down and we were still confident that we could come back and we managed to win that game 16-14, which was a real boost for the girls. They were really excited and feeling good about themselves after that and that led us into the final where we played Martensville.”
Walter said the team kicked off their championship season with a home tournament win in January, which was followed by a third-place finish in a Regina Queen City volleyball club tournament and fourth-place showing at a Moose Jaw Element Panthers competition. He said over that time the club found some good combinations on the court, which coupled through a strong work ethic allowing them to peak at the right time.
“It was a really well executed game by the girls,” said Walter, about their match against Martensville. “They dominated right from start to finish. They really worked hard, were aggressive, set the plays up well and so things went well for them. Overall, (it was) a really good performance by the whole group.”
