Estevan’s Chase Foord won a pair of gold medals in the Sask. Submission Series mixed martial arts event held in Saskatoon on March 11.
Chase gained submission victories in the grey belt division over both of his opponents to win gold in both the gi and no-gi classes. He competed in the 100 to 125 pound division, even though he’s only 100 pounds.
The gi is the uniform competitors wear in Brazilian jiu jitsu, including the jacket, pants and belt. When they wear the gi, they can use different holds and moves, but when they wear regular attire in no gi, they have to employ another holds.
The Sask. Submission Series is a three-part tournament to crown provincial champions in gi and no gi. There is also a title for most submission wins. Chase won this series two years ago.
“The goal is to get the athletes competing more and to grow in the BJJ (Brazilian ji jitzu) in all gyms in Saskatchewan,” said Gardiner.
The next event is in June.
