The opening round of the Frametech Classic at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course has wrapped up.
Nearly 120 golfers are entered in this year’s tournament, between the men’s, senior men’s and women’s competitions.
Grady Brown is the leader after the first round, as he shot a 3-under-par 69 to take a two-shot lead over Cody Balon, Daryl Donovan and Kade Johnson.
Brown eagled the par-5 seventh hole, and notched birdies on the fifth, 11th and 13th holes.
The top golfers in the men’s event will be inserted into the championship flight, and will compete in the popular Dave Price Memorial Horse Race on Sunday afternoon. The horse race is contested on the golf course’s back nine, and golfers are eliminated on each hole until only one golfer remains.
A large crowd turns out to watch the horse race each year.
In the senior men’s event, Neil Unger has the lead after shooting a 4-over-par 76 in the opening round. Ron Rittaler is one stroke back.
Paige Wheeler and Tenille Wilhelm are tied for the lead in the women’s division, after each shot an 88 in the opening round. Lori Krupka is the closest to the leaders after shooting a 95.
The men’s divisions will be contested over three days. The final round starts Monday morning.
The women’s event is a two-day competition that wraps up on Sunday.
The Mercury will have updates on the tournament throughout the weekend.
