Brent Gedak signals to his front end about sweeping Friday night at Affinity Place in a match against Jason Jacobson.

Brent Gedak’s team simply couldn’t have curled much better than they did in their Friday night win over Jason Jacobson’s team at the 2018 SaskTel Tankard at Affinity Place.

Gedak won 7-3 over Jacobson in a must win game for them both.

“We’re going to have to play that good throughout the weekend here to finish,” Gedak said after the match. “If we don’t play that well we won’t win. We’ve gotten our feet wet, we’re starting to get a feel for the ice and we’re just going to keep going.”

Gedak nearly got into trouble in the first end when, with the hammer, he faced a pair of tightly buried Jacobson stones. Just to get one at that moment was a “miracle”, according to Gedak because he could have easily been down two or three without the correct angle.

“It was a risk and reward,” he said. “The front end didn’t like… we had another shot that was really hard and if I miss it at all, and not perfect, they were going to get three. If I missed the runback, they were only going to get two. So we thought the reward was better on that one.”

A measurement was needed and they missed counting two in that end by a hair.

Gedak’s rink will take to the ice at 9 a.m. against Scott Bitz.
“We’ve had a tough time against him this year,” said Gedak. “We’ve only played him once, and it came down right to the last shot. They’re beating some good teams up and we expect them to play well tomorrow. We’ll have to play well to beat them”

In the other matches Friday night, Brock Virtue beat Brady Kendel 6-4 in a B side match, Steve Laycock beat Bitz 10-2 in another B side match and Adam Casey stayed alive by beating Jeff Hartung 7-2 in a C side match.

The 9 a.m. draw will see Gedak against Bitz, Carl deConnick Smith against Ryan Deis, in a C side match, Virtue against Laycock in the B side final and Casey against Kendel. If Gedak wins the 9 a.m. match, he’ll play at 2 p.m. in one of two C finals, against the winner of Casey and Kendel.
