The Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings will host two exhibition games this weekend.
They will play the Regina Cougars woman’s team on Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m. Then host the Radville Midget team on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
This will be a good practice for the Gold Wings, as they will host the 2016 Esso Cup, the midget national female tournament, which will be held April 17 to 23. Game packages are still available for purchase from the Weyburn Review/ Weyburn This Week office.
It was also announced by the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League that Gold Wings captain Baillee Bourassa is now a member of the Century Club.
Bourassa has 107 career games played.
In total, six Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League players were added to the 100 Career Game Club after the conclusion of the 2015-2016 hockey season.
Regina Rebels defenseman Santana Gravelle finished her career with 112 career games, which puts her at sixth overall on the Century Club list.
Melville Prairie Fire defenseman Tracy Prybylski was next with 111 games and was tied for seven overall. A pair of defenseman finsihed the year at 104 career games played, Melville Prairie Fire Eryn Johanson and Prince Albert Bear Brooke Hobson. Both of these players return next year to add to their totals.
Swift Current Wildcats defenseman Kayla Kirwin finished the season with 102 career games.
The Gold Wings have also set their dates for the annual Spring Prospect Camp, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1.
The Prospect Camp will introduce each player to an elite level of hockey, allowing young women to showcase their abilities in practice skills and game performance. This camp will also give our scouts and coaching staff an opportunity to identify some players for the 2016-2017 season, as well as prospects for future seasons.
This Prospect Camp will cost $80 per player. Each player will participate in various scrimmage sessions. Registration forms for the Prospect Camp are available on the Gold Wings website.
Players are to arrive at the arena lobby at Crescent Point Place on Saturday, April 30 for registration.
With all of the growth and success in women’s hockey and all of the skills that are being shown in Saskatchewan, Weyburn is serious about maintaining a competitive team for years to come. The Gold Wings are a growing team, a growing league and their organization is confident in the players they have identified.
In other female hockey news, several alumni from the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League were active in the Canadian college and universities championships.
The CIS held its championship in Calgary, where the University of Montreal captured the gold medal, winning over the University of British Columbia.
Emily Ryan from Weyburn competed with the St. Thomas University. Whitney Thorp from Weyburn competed with Swift Current NAIT. Alumni Gold Wing Delaney Frey of Regina competed with the University of Calgary.
