Both Weyburn and Stoney Creek entered Wednesday night 3-0. And with two teams already at three losses, their places in Friday's semi-finals were secure.
This game was more about positioning themselves for the playoffs. The Wings sit in second place after losing their first game of round robin play.
The Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings were defeated by the host Stoney Creek Sabres 3-2, with Madison Solie and Paige Smith scoring the goals for the Gold Wings in the second period.
"We were nervous coming into the playoffs because of the unknown but it's been a solid week," said Coach Chad Kish.
Representing the West, the Gold Wings are 3-1 (as of publication), beating the Sudbury Lady Wolves in the opening game of the championship 2-1 on April 20. Madison Solie opened the scoring for the Gold Wings with assists to Cassidy Pirlot and Jenica Whitrow. In the third period, Whitrow scored off the sticks of Pirlot and Bailee Bourassa.
The Gold Wings came out 4-2 over the Edmonton Thunder on April 20. Scoring the first goal of the game for the Gold Wings was Whitrow from Cassidy Pirlot. The girls lit up the third period with goals from Bourassa, assisted by Pirlot; Then Pirlot with assists to Whitrow and Bourassa; and Caitlyn Dempsey assisted by Whitrow.
In their third round robin game against the Fraser Valley Phantom, the Gold Wings played to a 3-2 win. Dempsey scored two goals with the help of Tessa Wilson and Kassidy Sjostrand and Bourassa scored with assists to Pirlot and Whitrow.
"All of our lines have got some scoring. We're making sure we get that from everybody. Overall it's been an awesome experience for the girls," said Kish. "We've got to our goal, and now we want to make sure to make it to the finals."
The Gold Wings faced the Moncton Rockets April 24, the results of that game were not known at the time of publication.
Today, April25, the semi-finals will be played out with the puck dropping at 3:30 p.m. EDT, and at 7 p.m. EDT.
Saturday, the Bronze game is set for 12 p.m. EDT. and at the Gold medal game at 4 p.m. EDT.
