The South East GoldWings midget AA female hockey team split their first two games at Hayley Wickenheiser’s Wickfest Female World Hockey Festival.
Competing in the Midget Elite division, the GoldWings opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Surrey Falcons out of B.C.
Marci LeBlanc opened the scoring early in the first period, and Jenna Currie doubled the advantage with a goal early in the second. The two teams exchanged goals the rest of the way.
Surrey’s Grace Hanberg cut the lead in half with a goal midway through the second, but Khloe Bedore restored the two-goal margin with a goal 54 seconds into the third.
Sarah Toews’ goal with less than eight minutes to play in the third pulled the Eagles to within a goal, but Kiera Pittman’s goal with 39 seconds remaining clinched the GoldWings victory.
The GoldWings second game was a 4-2 loss to Alberta’s St. Albert Sharks.
Kaycee Mullinger opened the scoring for the GoldWings with 3:11 to play in the first period, but the Sharks took the lead with goals 2:23 apart in the second period on markers by Aidan Soltis and Regan Ackroyd.
Jordon Meyers scored for the GoldWings 85 seconds after Ackroyd’s goal to tie the game.
Libby Langenhann’s tally with 4:04 to play in the middle frame gave the Sharks the lead, and she added her second of the game with 45 seconds to play in the third.
Taryn McKinney was in goal for both games.
The GoldWings will play Saturday night against Calgary’s GHC Fire at 6:15 p.m., and Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. against the Edmonton Pandas.
