Canadian PGA golfer Graham DeLaet of Weyburn withdrew from the Bridgestone Invitational Tournament on Sunday with the flu, following a rough third round where he posted a six-over par result.
He had a three-under 67 in his first round, and a one-under 69 in the second round, before running into bogey trouble in his third round and finishing with a six-over 76; he then withdrew and did not play the fourth round.
The tournament was held at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. He is still expected to play in the PGA Championship, which begins on Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky.
In an interview with PGATour after his second round, he said he was disappointed in that round, feeling the numbers didn't reflect the play that he had.
He notched two birdies, but also three bogeys, on the front nine, and three birdies and one bogey on the back nine to go one under.
He commented his three-under finish from the day before was relatively easy, but he struggled to get the one-under finish in the second round.
DeLaet said he was very happy with his finish at the Canadian Open the week before, and felt that gave him some confidence.
"It was nice to see some results here," he said, and added of going into his third round, "I think as long as you drive onto the fairways, you have a chance to make some birdies."
In the first round, he made two birdies on the front nine, on holes 1 and 7, and on hole 16 on the back 9 to finish up at three-under par.
In the third round, he had three birdies on the front nine, on holes 1, 5 and 9, but this was offset by three bogeys, on holes 4, 7 and 8. Then, on the back nine, he recorded four bogeys, and a double-bogey on No. 14, to finish with a six-over round.
DeLaet's longest drive was 360 yards, which he hit in his first round, and from the three rounds, he recorded a total of 11 birdies, 31 pars, 11 bogeys and a double-bogey.
This finish dropped him four places in the FedEx Cup standings to 30th, with 1,059 points in the standings and earnings so far in the 2014 season of $2,269,612. He is currently ranked 40th in the world golf rankings.
Last week, he was the top Canadian at the Canadian Open, where he finished tied for seventh place.
So far in this PGA season, DeLaet has had two second-place finishes, and seven finishes in the top-10.
He's had nine top-25 finishes and made the cut in 15 events of 20 events.
In his career earnings so far, he's earned $7,134,818 on the PGA Tour.
