Three University of Regina Cougars were among those selected to participate at Hockey Canada’s Women’s Development Camp in Calgary from August 5-14.
Forwards Kylie Gavelin and Jaycee Magwood, as well as defenceman Alexis Larson will represent the Cougar alongside some of the best university players from across the country.
Alexis Larson grew up in Weyburn, and started her hockey career in the city. Kyle Gavelin also has a local connection, as she played with the Southern Range Gold Wings.
The event will serve as a tune-up for Canadian Interuniversity Sport athletes, as the 22 players invited will look to earn a roster spot for the team that will compete at the 2017 FISU Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The camp will see the CIS squad play four exhibition games, two against Canada’s women’s development program and two against Team Sweden.
“I’m very excited for our three athletes that were invited to the camp,” said Sarah Hodges, head coach for the Cougars. “They’ve definitely earned their spots and have been working very hard during the off-season. I’m excited to see how they perform.”
Hodges will also be involved with the camp, as she was named the Team Leader of the development camp back in May.
The Universiade is scheduled for January 29 to February 8, 2017.
