Hockey players chosen in WHL bantam draft

The Western Hockey League completed the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft on May 4. Four Weyburn hockey players were selected during the draft, which included 230 players in total.

The Western Hockey League completed the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft on May 4. Four Weyburn hockey players were selected during the draft, which included 230 players in total.
The Lethbridge Hurricanes took Jonah Regier in the second round, 38th overall, and selected Drew Englot, 76th overall pick in the fourth round. Regier spent the 2015-16 season with the bantam AA Wings. In 29 games, the defenseman put up six points. From there, he moved on to the Notre Dame Bantam AAA Hounds program, which plays in the CSSHL. Englot played with the bantam AA Wings. From there, he joined the Notre Dame Hounds bantam AAA program. He was also selected to wear the C with the team in Wilcox. Englot tallied 14 points in 30 games with the Hounds.
The Kelowna Rockets took forward Ethan Ernst 61st overall, in the third round and selected Steven Kesslering, originally from Bengough, in the ninth round of the draft. Ernst spent last year with the bantam AAA Hounds in Wilcox, and tallied 33 points in 30 games. He also saw some action with the Notre Dame Hounds AAA organization, picking up three points in 10 games. Kesslering played this past season with the bantam AA Wings.
The Spokane Chiefs selected Zac Robins 80th overall. Robins spent the past season with the bantam AA Wings. The Moose Jaw Generals also called Robins up for a game.
Other players from the region who were selected in the WHL bantam draft include Estevan’s Alex Von Sprecken (116th overall, Spokane Chiefs); Carnduff’s Carey Levesque (191st overall, Moose Jaw Warriors); and Cal Caragata from Montmartre (203rd overall, Saskatoon Blades).
