Hunter Chipley wins gold at Canada Winter Games

Estevan’s Hunter Chipley has won a gold medal in the archery recurve individual male event at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

Chipley defeated Alberta’s Aaron Cox 6-4 Thursday in the gold medal showdown to win the second gold medal for Saskatchewan at this year’s Games.

Chipley was among the contenders in his event from the start. After the first round, he was in second place with a score of 573, just seven points behind Cox. He also had a score of 573 in the second round, which was nine points behind Cox.

He finished the qualification round in second spot with a score of 1,146, which earned him a bye to the quarter-finals.

Chipley defeated New Brunswick’s Luc Arseneau Chiasson 6-0 in the quarters, and Ontario’s Reece Wilson-Poyton 7-3 in the semifinal round, setting up the showdown with Cox in the final.

Chipley isn’t finished at the Games. He’s also entered in the recurved mixed event with Jay Gegner of Regina. They are in third place after the preliminary round with 2,156 points.
