Both Brett Jones and Brendon LaBatte were chosen as 2014 Canadian Football League All-Stars, as announced by the league on Thursday morning.
The All-Stars were selected by the Football Reporters of Canada and the league’s head coaches. Jones was chosen as All-Star centre, while LaBatte was an All-Star offensive guard.
For Jones, this is the first time he has earned an All-Star nod by the Canadian Football League. Just recently he picked up offensive lineman of the year honours at the CFL awards night, and then helped the Calgary Stampeders to Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
Jones was one of two pillars of an offensive line for the Stamps, that allowed Calgary to lead the CFL with an average of 143.9 rushing yards per game. Their offensive line also allowed just 26 sacks, a league low.
This is the third time that LaBatte has won All-Star honours from the CFL. LaBatte recently completed his seventh CFL season and third with the Riders.
LaBatte played 15 regular season games at left guard, helping pave the way for the team’s ground attack. This marks LaBatte’s sixth consecutive division All-Star nomination. His other All-Star recognition were during the 2011 and 2013 seasons.
Both LaBatte and Jones started their football careers with the Weyburn Comp Eagles football team. Also, both players continued their career with the University of Regina Rams.
