The Estevan junior Coaler Rollers roller derby team concluded the season with a black versus pink scrimmage game during their windup on June 21.
The game included both level one and two skaters along with the level three skaters.
“We just divided them up in half, half black, half pink so that we can have all of our players play in a final game in Estevan,” said coach Lorelei Lachambre.
Throughout the season, Lachambre said the team improved and had fun while learning the sport.
“We had a lot of fun … the teams that we were playing … it is their fifth year, so we got a late start,” said Lachambre. “We just need them to grow physically because we need a bigger presence on the track … so we can lay down some more hits and have an intimidation factor.”
What impressed Lachambre with this year's team is the girls stuck with the sport throughout the season and she believes the majority of them will return for next season.
“Probably the most amazing thing that I saw this season was the girls sticking with the sport, because in the fall when we recruit … it’s lots of roller skating and lots of girls love roller skating. But … when we introduce actually hitting and the game of derby, it's very physical, and it’s very rough. And the first year we tried it we lost a ton of people just because they didn’t like the hitting and the physical component,” said Lachambre.
Even though the Coaler Rollers didn't win a game, the team enjoyed playing the sport.
“I think everybody had a good time and we're all about fun,” Lachambre said.
The team will start up again in the fall and Lachambre said they are still looking for more youth to join.
