Local baseball players compete at junior nationals

Kade Phillips and Nathan Yunick were part of Team Saskatchewan at the under-13 tournament, which was contested in Repentigny, Que.

Saskatchewan went 1-4 at the tournament, losing 13-7 to the host Repentigny team in the tournament opener, and then 10-3 to Ontario 1, 12-11 to Nova Scotia and 15-8 to Manitoba, but they recovered to trounce Alberta 8-2 in their finale.

Phillips improved as the tournament went along. He was held hitless in his first three games, but went 2-for-4 in the game against Manitoba and 1-for-3 versus Alberta.

In the game against Manitoba, both of his hits were doubles and he brought in three runs.

He also scored once against Alberta.

On the mound, he pitched 2 2/3 innings in the tournament opener, surrendering five runs, all earned, but striking out six.

Yunick appeared as a hitter in three games, going 0-for-5 at the plate. He also had two appearances on the mound.

He pitched two innings against Ontario 1, giving up two runs, both unearned, in two innings. He struck out four. In the final game versus Alberta, he gave up two hits but no runs in an inning of work.

Mason Ficther was part of the Saskatchewan entry that competed at the under-15 boys Ray Carter Cup Championship in Oshawa, Ont., also from Aug. 22-25. Saskatchewan went 2-3, as they dropped their first three games: 13-2 to Quebec, 15-10 to B.C. and 7-1 to host Oshawa.

But they responded with a 4-0 win over Ontario and a 5-4 victory over Alberta to close out the tournament.

Fichter played three times for Saskatchewan. He went 1-for-3 against Oshawa with a single, and hitless in two plate appearances versus Alberta.

On the mound, he gave up seven runs, four earned, in two innings against B.C.
