A team with a pair of Estevan curlers nearly won on the weekend at a Saskatchewan women’s curling tour event.
The Rae Williamson rink out of Weyburn features Estevan-based lead Leah Moriarty and third Alexandra Meyer and made it to the final of the Regina Callie Club Saskatchewan Women’s Curling Tour event, losing 8-3 to the Ashley Thevenot rink.
Williamson’s rink lost 7-4 to Patricia Hersikorn of Saskatoon but won 6-4 over Shalon Fleming of Regina and 6-4 over Regina’s Chantelle Eberle. In a tiebreaker, they defeated Weyburn’s Emily Haupstein 10-3 and won 5-3 over Fleming and 10-5 over Saskatoon’s Jessica Mitchell in the semifinal.
The next Saskatchewan Women’s Curling Tour stop is Nov. 2-4 at the Saskatoon Nutana Curling Club. This season’s provincial Viterra Scotties championship will be Jan. 22-27, 2019, in Humboldt.
On the men’s side of provincial curling scene, unlike last year, Brent Gedak’s rink was not able to get a quick spot in the SaskTel Tankard with his team’s first curling event of the year.
Last weekend at Saskatoon Nutana Curling Club was the first stop on the Saskatchewan Men’s Curling Tour, and a win there last year earned Gedak’s rink a spot at the hometown Tankard. This season’s men’s provincial curling championship will be in Whitewood Feb. 6-10, 2019.
Gedak’s rink lost 5-2 to Josh Heidt of Kerrobert Friday evening in the A event, and then 6-5 to Rylan Kleiter in the B event Saturday afternoon. In the C event, Gedak won 4-2 over Tyler Krupski of the Regina Callie Club and then lost 6-5 to Lionel Holm of Watrous in the C semifinal in the evening.
It was Gedak’s first weekend on the Saskatchewan Men’s Curling Tour with his new team. The new squad has Jason Ackerman as his new third, retains Derek Owens at second and the new lead is Curtis Horwath.
The next stop on the provincial men’s curling tour is Nov. 9-11 at the Regina Highland Curling Club. The home stop on the tour is Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Power Dodge Curling Centre.
