Eight of the top women’s teams in Saskatchewan are at the Power Dodge Curling Centre in Estevan this weekend for the 2020 Last Chance Women’s Bonspiel.
Games started on Friday afternoon and will wrap up Sunday. Three teams will punch their ticket for the 2020 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts women’s curling provincials in Melville, which begin later this month.
One local team has already been impressive. The Shalon Fleming rink, which also includes third Candace Newkirk, second Sherrilee Orsted and lead Jasmine Kerr, won their first two games Friday. They opened with a 9-8 victory in 11 ends over Brett Barber, a game that the Fleming rink trailed 8-5 through eight ends. But Fleming scored two in the ninth and stole one in each of the 10th and 11th ends.
Then they carried over the momentum to a 12-1 victory in seven ends over Jade Bloor.
Fleming will be back on the ice at 3 p.m. Saturday for a game against Jessica Mitchell to determine who gets the first provincial qualifier.
Another local team entered is skipped by Rae Williamson of Estevan. They scored once in the 10th and final end to defeat Mandy Selzer 8-7 in their opening game, but then they lost 8-3 to Mitchell’s entry.
The Mercury will have more details on this event as they become available.
