Hailey Jones is one of several Weyburn athletes who will be competing in the FemSport Challenge, to be held in Regina on Saturday, August 20.
The FemSport Challenge is a female strength and endurance competition. There are many FemSport Challenges that run throughout Canada, in most provinces.
Jones has competed five times, going into her sixth competition. She is currently ranked third for their Calgary division and second in southeast Saskatchewan. She has won first place in various categories.
Last year, while in Regina, Jones finished with a silver medal, so she is pushing for a gold this year.
“For me, it is important to improve my personal bests in each challenge. Every time I compete, my goal is to get faster, and get my times down.”
Jones also said that each competition is a learning experience as an athlete, since when she encounters a challenge she is then able to work on that weakness, and improve her abilities for the next competition.
“It is important to stay calm during the competition, and don’t let one bad event take over your focus.”
The most important thing for Jones is to shine a spotlight on women in strength events, such as FemSport.
“FemSport is open to all women, and all ages. Athletes can be at any activity level,” said Jones. FemSport started in 2011, and each event in the competition has six challenges: tire flip, obstacle course (including car push, value and agility apparatus), box jumps, tire drag, an inverted row and a kettlebell relay.
“Every challenge is timed, and counted. Your ranking comes down to seconds. FemSport comes down to who is faster and stronger every time,” said Jones.
“This is the only event of its kind and it’s only for women. FemSports also welcomes teams of three or individual.” The division categories at FemSport include novice, open and masters. The masters division is the newest category, and is for those 40 years and older. Novice, Open and Masters division categories.
“It is amazing to see that the competitors in ever division are getting stronger and stronger each year.”
