Ten members of the Estevan Mermaids synchronized swim club travelled to Winnipeg for the Canadian Prairie Championships that were held from Friday to Sunday.
The solos and duets took place on Friday. Hannah Mantei continued her strong season by winning the gold medal in the 13- to 15-year-old provincial stream (PS) solo competition, posting a score of 57.93 to best a dozen other competitors from across Canada. Haley Copeland swam in the same age group and finished eighth with a score of 54.96.
Rachel Duncan competed in the eight- to 10-year-old solos competition. She finished with a score of 42.36.
Laura Swirski and Rebecca Duncan posted a score of 50 to finish eighth in duets in the PS division for the 13- to 15-year-olds.
The Mermaids competed in figures on Saturday with 17 other clubs from across Canada.
In the 11- and12-year-old PS category, Laura Swirski placed 35th. In the 13 to 15 category, Hannah Mantei and Gemma Bittman cracked the top 10. Mantei finished in sixth place with a score of 60.08, and Bittman wound up in ninth place with a score of 59.41.
Nyla Dyck placed 18th, Haley Copeland came in 22nd, Rebecca Duncan was 41st and Caitlin Graham was 44th.
In 16- to 18-year-old figures, Marlie Weinrauch finished 18th, followed by Maya Daoust in 30th.
In the team competition, the Mermaids placed seventh. They had high expectations after provincials, where the Mermaids dominated. Mantei, Bittman, Copeland, Weinrauch, Graham, Daoust, Duncan and Dyck were on the team.
Brenda Lyons coached the Mermaids in Winnipeg and Jody Copeland was the trainer for the competition.
