In order to maintain their condition throughout the off season, many Weyburn Red Wings players stick to a strength and conditioning regime a couple times a week.

Mike Johnson, of Pursuit Strength and Conditioning, forms work outs for the players in training for the fall camp.

"I provide them age-appropriate strength and conditioning that is hockey specific," said Johnson.

During the hockey season, the players attend Pursuit Strength and Conditioning four times per week to keep their athleticism on and off the ice.

Tristyn Deroose, 15, will be heading to Yorkton this winter to play with the AAA Midget Maulers. He says the motivation he receives from Johnson pushes him to where he wants to be.

"This training helps to reach all your goals and makes you a better hockey player," he said.

Routine is also what helps Weyburn Red Wings player Nicholas Pouliot.

The 18-year-old forward says that being organized with set times for work outs helps in the off season.

"It helps when the work outs are set, especially for staying in shape in the summer," he said.

Josh Lees, 20, and former Red Wing Thomas Carleton, 21, have been training with Johnson for five years and say that this type of strength and conditioning helps to set players apart heading into training camp.

"Keeping up with conditioning sets you apart from the other guys. Training camp isn't really training camp anymore, it's more like try outs and you better show up in top shape," said Lees.

Carleton added that the 45 minute work outs are easy to fit into his schedule and he can accomplish twice as much in half the time as working out somewhere else.

"It's 'get in, go hard, go home," he said.
