Owen Tools were the champions in the A event at the annual Oilfield Technical Society (OTS) Bonspiel. The tournament took place from March 26 to 29.
They defeated TS&M 2 6-4 and it was the first time they made it to the final of the A event.
“We’ve been competing here for probably 15, 20 years now, and this is the first time we got to the finals of the A,” skip Fedor Rudnitski said.
In the first end of the A final, Owen Tools scored three points. TS&M 2 didn’t give up and stole a point in each of the next three ends to tie the game at 3-3.
“We were getting a little down on ourselves, we were thinking we weren’t going to make another shot, but the guys came back again,” Rudnitski said.
In the fifth end, Owen Tools scored two points to break the tie and go up 5-3.
They added to their lead in the sixth, when they stole a point (and only surrendered a single point in the seventh end), to have a 6-4 lead going into the final end.
TS&M 2 ran out of rocks in the end and Owen Tools won the championship.
“The guys all curled well, it was really good, and the last time three of us curled was at this bonspiel last year, and it was a lot of luck,” Rudnitski said.
Owen Tools started their tournament on March 26 with a victory over Packers Plus, and later that day, defeated AE Com.
The following day, Owen Tools beat the Beer Drinkers to advance to the A quarter-finals. They defeated BGW in the quarter-finals and also earned a victory over AKME in the semifinals.
There were four events altogether in the tournament. In the B event final, TBC Oil and Gas earned a 6-3 victory over TSM 1 and in the C final Estevan Metere beat Electro Gas 6-5.
There were two finals in the D event. In the D1 final, AT Naka and the Beer Drinkers were tied at 9-9 after eight ends, forcing and extra end. AT Naka scored 6 points in the extra end to earn a 15-9 victory.
In the D2 final, Apex defeated Spearing 8-2.
Overall, there were 40 teams entered in the bonspiel.
