The Weyburn Red Wings were the first Wild Card team to move on to the quarter-finals of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, after they took a three-game sweep of the Kindersley Klippers.
Carson Rose, who finished the regular season on a 13-game point streak, had three goals and five points in the three-game sweep.
The Red Wings claimed a 3-0 victory during game one of the best-of-five series on Thursday night. Weyburn had the home-ice advantage for game one and two of the series.
Cole Woodliffe, Ian Parker and Connor Burk also scored for Weyburn. Carter Phair stopped 30 attempts while earning the shut-out win in net.
Then in game two on Friday night, the Red Wings scored a goal in each of the three periods, to win 3-1 over Kindersley.
Parker, Jacob Wozney and Rose all scored for Weyburn.
Phair was in net again for the Wings, stopping 52 out of 53 attempts by the Klippers.
Then for game three, held in Kindersley on Sunday night, the Red Wings earned a 6-4 victory.
The two teams were tied 3-3 after two periods. Goals for Weyburn were scored by Rose, Wozney and Ben Hiltz.
Then in the third period, Kindersley took a slight edge, but then Rose tied up the game one minute later. Ryan Rothenburger scored while short-handed to give Weyburn the edge, and then in the final seconds of action, Braden Mellon scored into an empty net for the Weyburn win.
The Wings won’t know who’ll they’ll face in the quarter-final series of the playoffs until the conclusion of the Melfort-Notre Dame Wild Card Series. The two teams faced each other in game three on Monday night, with ??? gaining the edge.
If the seventh-seeded Hounds win that series, then they will face Flin Flon, sending Weyburn to play off against the Battlefords. If Melfort pulls off the upset, they will get the Stars, with Weyburn heading to Flin Flon.
