The playoff picture for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is getting closer and closer to being decided — but in the case of the Weyburn Red Wings, their final position is not quite decided.
According to the SJHL league standings, the Red Wings are currently seventh place in the league, tied for points with the sixth-place Notre Dame Hounds. But the Hounds have a game in hand.
Their final placement in the league could all come down to tonight, March 1, when the Red Wings travel to face the Notre Dame Hounds, at 7:30 p.m. However, the bottom rung of the final eight who will advance to the SJHL playoffs is a very tight situation.
The Yorkton Terriers hold onto eighth place overall, just one point behind both the Hounds and Wings.
Once the SJHL regular season has been finalized, the teams ranked seventh and eighth overall go head-to-head in the Survivor Series. The teams ranked first to sixth overall get a week of rest during the Survivor Series, before the first round.
It has already been declared that the Battleford North Stars have secured the SJHL league pennant, for claiming first place overall with 93 points in the regular season. Nipawin is second place currently, with 79 points, and the Estevan Bruins are third place with 71 points. These three teams will have home-ice advantage in the first round of playoffs.
After their game with Notre Dame tonight, the Red Wings will close their regular season with a home-and-home series against the Estevan Bruins.
Weyburn will be in Estevan on Friday, March 3, and then host the Bruins at Crescent Point Place on Saturday, March 4.
