The Weyburn Red Wings home-and-home season openers against the Yorkton Terriers ended in a split, with the road team taking each game. The other five home-and-home series played during the season openers all ended in sweeps.
The Red Wings lost 3-1 to the Terriers during their home opener, held at Crescent Point Place on Friday night. After no goals were scored in the first period, both teams scored a goal each in the second period. Dawson Atamanchuk scored for Weyburn, assisted by Landon Walters and Erik Olson.
In the third period, Yorkton responded with two more goals, to earn the win. Arik Weersink was in net for the Red Wings, stopping 31 out of 33 shots.
The Red Wings came away with a 3-2 win in overtime, while playing in Yorkton on Sunday afternoon. Both teams scored in the first period, with Derick Smith notching a power play goal for Weyburn, off an assist by Erik Olson. Both teams scored one more each in the second period, with Cole Woodliffe scoring for Weyburn, assisted by Matthew Jones and Tyran Brown.
After no goals were scored in the third period, an unassisted goal by Jones gave Weyburn the win. Weersink was in net for Weyburn, and stopped 25 out of 27 shots on net.
The Red Wings will be in Melville on Friday, September 22, and then will be in Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Showcase. During the SJHL showcase, they have a game against Flin Flon on Sunday, September 24 and a game against the Kindersley Klippers on Monday, September 25.
In other SJHL news, the league is partnering with KidSport Saskatchewan and SaskEnergy Network Members for the fourth annual “Goals for KidSport”. The program raises funds in communities across the province to help youth access sports opportunities by reducing the financial pressure that some may face.
For every home goal scored by an SJHL team (up to 1,000) during the regular season, $20 per goal will be donated to the local KidSport chapters. The reigning KidSport Cup Champions are the Battleford North Stars.
