The Weyburn Red Wings split a doubleheader against the Estevan Bruins over the weekend.
The Red Wings were looking for an advantage over the Bruins, who currently lead the Viterra division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
The Bruins won a 5-4 shootout decision on Friday night at home, while the Wings won 4-2 on Saturday in Estevan.
During the Friday game, the game opened with the Wings scoring two goals and Estevan scoring once in the first period. Carson Rose scored an unassisted goal and Jacob Wozney scored the second goal.
Both teams scored one goal each in the second period. Scoring for Weyburn was Cole Woodliffe during a power play.
Then in the third period, Ian Parker scored once for the Red Wings, while the Bruins scored twice to tie the game. After a scoreless overtime period, the teams headed into the shootout.
During the shootout, both teams sent up five shooters. None of the Red Wings’ shooters were able to score, but a lone goal from an Estevan shooter gave them the win.
Both Carter Phair and Shaun Fleming were in net for Weyburn. Phair was in net for the first 20 minutes, stopping 12 out of 13 attempts. Fleming was in net for the rest of the game, plus the overtime period. He stopped 25 out of 28 attempts by the Bruins.
During the Saturday game, the Bruins opened up the first period by scoring two goals. Then the Red Wings scored two goals in the second period and two in the third.
Scoring for Weyburn was Erik Olson and Jacob Wozney, both unassisted; Woodliffe, and an short-handed goal into an empty net by Mike Eskra.
Shaun Fleming was in net for the Red Wings. He stopped 25 out of 27 attempts by the Bruins.
Earlier in the week, the Red Wings scored a 3-1 win over the Melville Millionaires on Nov. 23. The Millionaires opened with a goal in the first period. The Red Wings had one goal in the second period, scored by Ian Parker. Then two goals in the third period, both scored by Wozney, first during a power play, and then into an empty net for the win.
Phair was in net for the win. He stopped 30 out of 31 attempts by the Bruins.
The Weyburn Red Wings will have two games at Crescent Point Place this weekend.
They host the Kindersley Klippers on Friday, Dec. 2 and then the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday, Dec. 3, with Salvation Army’s teddy bear toss to be held. Bears are to be thrown onto the ice when Weyburn scores their first goal. Both games start 7:30 p.m.
