The Weyburn Red Wings struggled to gain any points during the weekend, as they lost to the Estevan Bruins 6-1 at home on Friday night, and then lost 7-2 to the Humboldt Broncos in a road game on Saturday night.
In particular, head coach Wes Rudy noted the penalty problems after their game against Estevan where the Red Wings accumulated 90 minutes of penalties and had four power play goals scored against them by the Estevan offense.
“We haven’t played a first period all season and it finally caught up to us,” said Rudy. “The boys don’t want to go out and put in a solid 20 minutes to start the game, and our first shift of the game showed that attitude and it was indicative during the whole game.”
“Discipline usually hasn’t been an issue, but when you get frustrated then you are taking penalties,” said Rudy.
“I don’t think Estevan will change a whole lot (before our next game). The Bruins played a good game and our guys need to look over to the Bruin’s bench and see the effort that was there, so that they can duplicate it before our next game.”
During the game, the Bruins opened the first period with three goals. Estevan added two more goals to their lead in the second period, with Noah Wozney scoring the Red Wings’ only goal.
There were a few major incidents on the ice, right at the end of the second period, resulting in a Red Wing player getting ejected from the game. The intensity of the game continued in the third period, with three more physical confrontations between the two teams. Estevan was able to put one goal between the goal posts, to ensure their victory over Weyburn.
While in Humboldt for their next game, the Broncos had a slight lead after the first period with two goals. Donavon Lumb scored the opening goal for the Red Wings.
Then in the second period, the Broncos scored four times, while the only goal for the Red Wings was scored by Wozney.
Humboldt scored their seventh goal of the evening in the third period, ensuring their home victory.
The Weyburn Red Wings will be in Estevan tonight, October 5, where they will have a rematch against the Bruins. Then the Red Wings will host two games on the weekend, facing the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday, October 7 and facing La Ronge on Saturday, October 8. Both games are at Crescent Point Place, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Saturday night game will be a special Communithon-featured event, with a puck drop with Communithon Superheroes Shayda Cook and Mathea Mlynarski to start off the game.
