The Weyburn Red Wings won both of their games on the weekend, putting them back on top of the Viterra division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
During their Friday night game, the Red Wings won 4-3 against the Notre Dame Hounds during a shoot-out. The Hounds scored twice in the first period. Weyburn tied up the game with two goals in the second period, scored by Carson Rose and Tyran Brown.
Both teams scored one goal each in the third period, with Braden Mellon scoring for Weyburn. With the game tied, an overtime period was needed, and then a shootout period. Both teams sent 12 players each, before Cole Woodliffe scored for Weyburn, securing the two points for the Red Wings.
Nathan Hargrave was in net for the Red Wings during the game. He stopped 35 out of 38 attempts.
During their Saturday night game, the Red Wings secured a 6-0 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Devon Becker and Landon Walters scored in the first period, Rose scored in the second period, and Ian Parker, Woodliffe and Jacob Wozney all scored in the third period.
It was a strong night for Hargrave in net, who stopped all 29 attempts by the Ice Wolves.
Earlier in the week, the Red Wings were in Estevan on October 5, where they claimed some revenge over their Highway 39 rivals by winning 6-3.
Both teams opened the game by scoring a goal each in the first period, with Parker scoring during a power play to get Weyburn on the board. The Red Wings took a slight edge in the second period, with goals from Woodliffe, Parker and Rose, while the Bruins only scored twice.
Then in the third period, Donavon Lumb and Jeremy Lagler scored goals, while the Bruins were unable to pick up any more points. Shaun Fleming was in net for the win, stopping 31 out of 34 attempts.
The Red Wings will host the Battlefords on Friday, October 14, and then Flin Flon on Saturday, October 15.
