The Redvers Rockets have clinched first place in the Big Six Hockey League’s regular season standings.
Redvers defeated the Midale Mustangs 11-2 on Jan. 25 and the Bienfait Coalers 10-6 the following day to improve their record to 16-1.
The Rockets have won 15 straight games since losing 5-2 to the Carnduff Red Devils in their second game of the season. Fourteen of those victories have been by at least three goals.
Redvers sits two points ahead of the second place Red Devils, who have 30 points on the strength of a 14-2-2 record, but the Red Devils have finished their 18-game schedule.
The Red Devils split their final two games of the regular season. They defeated the Wawota Flyers 6-4 on Jan. 24, but lost 5-3 to the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings two nights later, dashing any hopes they had of catching Redvers for top spot.
The most interesting race in the league is for third place. The Coalers (10-7) currently sit third with 20 points, but the Wheat Kings (9-6) are fourth and have two games in hand. The Flyers and the Cougars are both 8-7-1 for 17 points, and still have a shot at third with each team having two games to play.
Bienfait edged the Flyers 4-3 on Jan. 24 in a pivotal game between the two teams, and then lost to Redvers two nights later. Wawota dropped both of their games during the weekend.
Yellow Grass split their games, as they lost 4-3 to Midale on Jan. 24 before recovering to defeat Carnduff. And the Cougars won 12-2 over their Highway 13 neighbours, the Arocla-Kisbey Combines, on Jan. 25.
Midale (6-11) has 12 points. They split their games and will finish seventh. The Comines (2-15-1) are eighth with five points, but have played all of their games. The Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings are ninth with four points, but have two games left.
The final six games in the regular season will be played over the next few days. Wawota visits Carlyle and Yellow Grass is at Kipling-Windthorst on Jan. 31. The following night, Midale visits Wawota, Bienfait is at Redvers and Kipling-Windthorst is at Yellow Grass in the second half of a home and home between the two teams.
Yellow Grass will be at Carlyle Feb. 4 to wrap up the regular season.
