The ladies of Weyburn's roller derby team, the Strait Jackettes, are ready and pumped for their second match of the season, as they host the Regina Gravediggers on Saturday, Sept. 27 for the "Fall Equi-Knocks".
The roller derby game will be held at the Weyburn Curling Rink, with the doors open at 6 p.m. and the game underway at 7 p.m.
This is the second and final game for the Strait Jackettes, after they won their first match, held on Aug. 9, as they knocked The Veronicas from Swift Current by the score of 154-102.
"We had a big crowd. We were very happy with the way it turned out," said Krista Sandney, a.k.a. Venus N D'Skypes, who noted the team held a recruitment a few nights later and ended up with a half-dozen women eager to join up after they took in the game and saw what it was all about.
"The game definitely sparked a lot of interest. They'll be ready to skate next season," said Sandney.
Of their upcoming opponents, who skate with the Regina Pile of Bones Derby Club, she said they are a large and experienced group of skaters, and have been together now for at least five years or more.
The Weyburn girls know who they'll be going up against, as a number of them played them two years ago when they were members of a joint team with Estevan, before they were able to get enough players for their own team.
"We hope to give them a good run for their money. We're practising twice a week, so we're ready for the game," said Sandney.
After the first game, the team has been working on improving their communications during the game, and staying strong through the duration of the match, said Sandney.
"I think it'll be a close game. We'll need all the fan support we can get," she added, noting the feedback from the first match was all very positive about how it went.
Tickets for the game are $10 per person, with children under 10 able to get in for free. The event is licensed, so minors must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available in advance from Pharmasave, or at the door. There will be an after-party at the King George Hotel.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go in support of the "Walk to Remember", which will be held from the Family Place on Sunday, Sept. 28.
