A chance to experience thousands of pieces of Saskatchewan’s sports history is at Estevan‘s fingertips this week.

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame has commemorated their 50th year of operation by sending a free travelling exhibit of select sports memorabilia across the province this summer and fall. The sports showcase travelled to Estevan on July 24 for the opening of the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games and will remain parked outside of Affinity Place until July 28.

Autumn McDowell, communications coordinator with the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, said this year’s travelling exhibit is the first they have ever done and they will visit 70 communities during its run. She said giving people around the province a chance to see some of their many exhibits seemed a perfect way to celebrate their anniversary and Saskatchewan’s sports history.

“We have a huge collection of artifacts at the Hall,” said McDowell. “We actually have over 14.000 artifacts in our collection, so it had to be scaled down significantly.”

McDowell said the sports of curling, hockey and football as well as the Olympic Games is the major focus of the exhibit. She said there are 51 sports in the Hall and 505 inductees and that obviously couldn’t fit into their travelling exhibit trailer, but the hope is there is enough to pique everyone’s interest.
“I really love the hockey stuff,” she said. “We also have two Olympic torches (from 1988 and 2010) and just the memories that go along with those and the prestige (makes) it’s so cool to see them in person.”
