Baseball season has officially started for Weyburn players. The Southeast Performance Pump Twins baseball team opened their 2017 midget baseball season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League with doubleheader wins.
The Twins faced off against Swift Current for the doubleheader, which was held on April 22.
The Twins won 4-2 over Swift Current in their first game of the doubleheader. After two scoreless innings, the Twins scored two runs in the third inning for an early lead.
Both the Twins and Swift Current each scored two runs in the fifth inning. The Twins kept onto their two-run lead, with no more runs scored in the sixth or the seventh innings.
Brett MacMurchy was the winning pitcher. He pitched six innings and had two runs scored off six hits. Ryan Gaab closed off the game on the mound.
The Twins blanked Swift Current in their second game, winning 8-0. The Twins scored two runs in the first inning, then added one run in both the second and fourth innings. They secured their victory over Swift Current with four runs in the sixth.
Rhett Nikolejsin was the lone pitcher for the Twins for the game. He only had four hits taken during his seven innings on the plate.
A special exhibition game for the Southeast Twins will be held against the IP Selects in Estevan on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m.
The Southeast Twins return to league action with a a doubleheader against the Regina White Sox on Sunday, May 7.
Their home opener will be at Tom Laing Park against the White Sox on Wednesday, May 10.
The teams that the Southeast Twins will face in the midget AAA baseball division of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League includes: Muenster Red Sox, Northwest Prairie Pirates, Parkland Expos, Regina Athletics, Swift Current 57s, Saskatoon Cubs, Saskatoon Diamondbacks, Saskatoon Giants, Regina White Sox and the Regina Wolfpack.
There are a number of practices upcoming for other teams in the Weyburn Minor Baseball League.
There will be mosquito house evaluations today, April 26 in Weyburn. Session one will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., and session two will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Both sessions are held on Diamond 2 and 3 in Jubilee Park.
The bantam AA Beavers will have their first game of the season at Jubilee Park, Diamond 1, on Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m. Their opponent has not been announced yet.
The peewee AA Beavers will face off against the Regina Buffalos at Jubilee Park, Diamond 6, on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:15 p.m. The bantam AA Beavers will play the Regina White Sox in Regina on Thursday, May 4.
Weyburn Minor Ball has also set their annual Eugene Emberley Memorial AAA baseball tournament on June 2-4.
